After dental implant surgery

Post-Operative Instructions After Dental Implant Surgery

At Memorial Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, your recovery and overall oral health are our priority. Following these guidelines will help ensure optimal healing after dental implant placement. Whether you’ve just received dental implants or are preparing for the procedure, this guide outlines important care instructions to support your healing process.

Do not disturb the surgical area

On the day of your dental implant surgery, avoid disturbing the surgical site. Refrain from rinsing, spitting, or touching the area. In many cases, a small metal healing abutment will be visible through the gum tissue, which is normal. Gentle care on the first day is crucial for successful healing.

Managing bleeding

Slight bleeding or blood-tinged saliva is expected for the first 24 hours. If excessive bleeding occurs (your mouth fills up rapidly with blood), bite down on a clean gauze pad placed directly over the wound for 30 minutes. If bleeding persists, please reach out to our team for further guidance. For more helpful tips on dental implant recovery, visit our blog.

Controlling swelling

Swelling is a normal reaction to surgery. Apply an ice pack — or a towel-wrapped bag of ice — to the cheek near the surgical site. Continue icing the area consistently for the first 36 hours to minimize swelling as much as possible.

Recommended diet

Stay well-hydrated, but avoid hot beverages or food in the initial 24 hours. Begin with soft foods and liquids and progress to your regular diet as comfort allows — unless otherwise directed by your oral surgeon. For a list of ideal food options during recovery, explore our Soft Foods After Oral Surgery guide.

Pain management

Start taking pain medication before the anesthetic wears off. For moderate discomfort, take 1-2 Tylenol or Extra Strength Tylenol every 3–4 hours. Alternatively, you may take Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin), 2 to 3 tablets of 200 mg doses every 3–4 hours as needed. For more severe pain, use the prescribed medication exactly as directed. Do not take medications you are allergic to or have been advised to avoid by your physician.

Antibiotics

Take your prescribed antibiotics as directed. Doing so will help prevent the risk of infection and ensure a smooth recovery. Learn more about maintaining your dental implants.

Maintaining oral hygiene

Keeping your mouth clean post-surgery is essential for proper healing. On the evening of your procedure, use the prescribed Peridex Oral Rinse before bed. Starting the day after surgery, rinse twice a day—after breakfast and before bedtime—holding the rinse in your mouth for 30 seconds before spitting it out. Continue rinsing with warm salt water (1 tsp of salt in 8 oz of warm water) at least 4–5 times daily, particularly after meals. Brushing your teeth and abutments is encouraged—just be gentle near the implant site.

Physical activity

We recommend limiting physical activities immediately after surgery. Strenuous exercise may increase bleeding, throbbing, or swelling. If any of these occur, pause your activity and rest. Keep in mind you might not be consuming your usual caloric intake, which could also affect your energy levels.

Use of dentures or prosthetics

Do not use partial dentures, flippers, or full dentures for at least 10 days following implant surgery, or unless your oral surgeon advises otherwise. This was likely discussed during your initial consultation. Limiting use reduces stress on healing tissues and improves implant success rates.
