On the day of your dental implant surgery, avoid disturbing the surgical site. Refrain from rinsing, spitting, or touching the area. In many cases, a small metal healing abutment will be visible through the gum tissue, which is normal. Gentle care on the first day is crucial for successful healing.
Start taking pain medication before the anesthetic wears off. For moderate discomfort, take 1-2 Tylenol or Extra Strength Tylenol every 3–4 hours. Alternatively, you may take Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin), 2 to 3 tablets of 200 mg doses every 3–4 hours as needed. For more severe pain, use the prescribed medication exactly as directed. Do not take medications you are allergic to or have been advised to avoid by your physician.
Keeping your mouth clean post-surgery is essential for proper healing. On the evening of your procedure, use the prescribed Peridex Oral Rinse before bed. Starting the day after surgery, rinse twice a day—after breakfast and before bedtime—holding the rinse in your mouth for 30 seconds before spitting it out. Continue rinsing with warm salt water (1 tsp of salt in 8 oz of warm water) at least 4–5 times daily, particularly after meals. Brushing your teeth and abutments is encouraged—just be gentle near the implant site.
We recommend limiting physical activities immediately after surgery. Strenuous exercise may increase bleeding, throbbing, or swelling. If any of these occur, pause your activity and rest. Keep in mind you might not be consuming your usual caloric intake, which could also affect your energy levels.
