Getting your Tooth Extraction in Houston?*

It is always our goal to save our patients’ natural teeth whenever possible. From time to time, however, when a tooth becomes too decayed or damaged, we must resort to tooth extraction services. Fortunately, technology, dental techniques, sedation options, and anesthesia have come a long way over the years, which enables us to make the extraction process as safe, comfortable, and efficient as possible.

Our surgical teams are experts trained to perform tooth removals and other oral surgeries as smoothly and swiftly as we can to get you back to your life without even missing a beat.

Why we might need to extract your tooth

If you’re experiencing any of the following with your teeth, you may need an extraction.

  • Severe Decay
  • Periodontal Disease
  • Fractures
  • Impacted teeth
  • Orthodontic Preparation

The importance of natural teeth

We always prefer to save your natural teeth (as many of them as we can) because they play a significant role in the health of your jawbone. Your jawbone requires regular stimulation to maintain bone structure.

A missing tooth will quickly lead to jawbone loss. This is why our oral surgeons recommend a special grafting procedure at the same time as your extraction. This can help prevent jawbone loss and allow for favorable conditions for a future implant down the road, should you need one.

Having a tooth extracted

Tooth extractions involve local anesthesia so you don’t feel any pain as local anesthetics numb the area. You may want additional anesthesia to help you feel more comfortable and relaxed.

The procedure itself typically takes less than an hour, and surgical extraction results and aftercare instructions are very safe and predictable.

Your recovery and home care

The most important things to know about recovery after a Tooth Extraction are:

  • Blood Clot Forms: It is very important for a blood clot to form after your surgery. You can help facilitate this by biting on a gauze pad for about an hour following the procedure to help stop the bleeding.
  • Straws and Smoking: Do not use straws or any tobacco products for several days following the surgery, as this will dislodge your blood clot, resulting in a very painful condition called “dry socket.”
  • Pain: As the anesthesia wears off, you may experience some swelling and soreness for a few days. Patients are typically able to manage the pain adequately with over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen. Any necessary prescription medicines will be discussed prior to your surgery. An ice pack may help with any swelling.
  • *Note: Specific tooth extraction home care instructions will be given prior to your surgery. We are always here to answer any additional questions you have.

If you’ve been told you need an extraction, you’re not alone. In fact, most people will have a tooth extraction at some point during their life.
